My work is being driven through Claude more often than not, and I think that is true for most people. The hooks and the mods are a great way to stay in touch with it.

On a Friday night I started a project to explore mods. Then I conceptualised it, and it became a thing: claude-mods, small tools around Claude Code and Codex, one folder per mod. Buddy is one of them.

Claude Code and Codex can run a script on events like “you sent a prompt”, “a tool is about to run”, “it needs your OK” and “the turn stopped”. Buddy’s script writes each session’s state to a file, and Buddy reads it.

Before Buddy, I moved to Claude desktop and ChatGPT desktop to manage my sessions. I switch between sessions, and they get lost in the worktrees. It was manual. I went to them one by one, and I would not know when something was done. I kept an eye on the wheel and the notification symbols, and sometimes the ChatGPT pet.

So I wanted an overlay which gives me a view. Buddy is a pet that moves around my screen. When a session is done, or waiting on me, it tells me.

How I use it

I prioritise based on my focus session. If I am debugging, or anything with a short running loop, those sessions come first, because I want to drive more work out of them. The long running sessions I basically do not watch. I jump between the short ones one by one. With Buddy, this has become pretty straightforward.

The most useful part

The most useful thing is tracking my day: how much work was done. It adds some fun to the loop.

Why people liked it

I shared it with a lot of people at work, and they really liked it. They gave me suggestions on the animals and other things. So now the bear eats honey, and the pug dances on good news: a session done, a PR green, a PR merged. It makes the process enjoyable. It also asks you to take a break, and to stop for the day.

How it works

1
2

Claude Code / Codex hook ──> session file ──> Buddy ──> bubble
agent runs: buddy say "PR is green, merge when ready" ──> inbox file ──> Buddy ──> bubble

Hooks and agents reach Buddy through files on my Mac. A long running agent can use it as its notification tool and send me updates, and add
--urgent
when I must act.

What’s next

Different people are interested in different things, so I am making the profiles customisable. Buddy is private source for now, open source is coming soon. Message me on LinkedIn with your GitHub username and I will send you an invite.
