A small pet on your Mac that watches your Claude Code and Codex sessions

Buddy on the desktop

Buddy is now open source: github.com/varun-ml/buddy.

Buddy is a small pet that lives on your Mac. It tells you when Claude Code or Codex has finished a task or needs your input, so you don’t have to keep checking every session.

It’s also just fun. The cat runs around your screen, the bear eats honey, and the robot dances every time you merge a PR. Stitch turns into a full alien when a PR’s checks fail. This month the pug is dressed up for Pujo and plays the dhak.

The nine buddies

I started it as an experiment with mods, because I was getting frustrated with Codex and wanted more from it. I shared it at work, people liked it, and I kept vibe coding on it. How I use it: I focus on the short sessions like debugging, and let the long-running agents ping me when they need me. The longer story is in my earlier post.

Install

1
git clone https://github.com/varun-ml/buddy.git ~/buddy && ~/buddy/install.sh

It needs macOS 13 or later, and builds on your Mac in about a minute. Everything stays on your Mac: no account, no tracking.

Costumes

Contribute

The bear was made by Siddharth Sahu, and the whole thing was built with Claude Code. PRs are welcome: add a pet, a costume for your festival, or support for Cursor or Gemini CLI.
